Our
Story
Today we’d like to introduce you to Bishop Moore.
Hi Bishop, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story is the story of many youths, single-parent homes, and mothers working to make sure we didn’t want for anything, through it all we encountered many of hardships but learned immeasurable life lessons. Being the middle child of three boys, I was the balancer, born in Alabama and raised in LA we were determined to do more than just survive. Despite the area being known for poverty and crime, I found solace in a small group of solid friends and family. These same tight-knit friends would go on to become successful in their own right. My big break into the filmmaking world came when on a chance encounter, I got the opportunity to be a Productive Assistant for Wayans Productions. I definitely wasn’t going to take that opportunity for granted. When Production wanted something done quickly and correctly, they knew who to call.
Every dime I made, instead of spending it on luxury items I spent on camera equipment, ultimately purchasing my first camera and the rest is history. I started making documentaries, including the highly acclaimed documentary Fantasy, which featured Snoop Dogg, Xzibit and a young Nipsey Hussle. It created much buzz on the festival circuit and garnered respect in the film community. During that time I also produced and directed numerous reality projects that have taken me around the world from Africa to Asia, to Europe to Latin America. Most recently, along with comedian Guy Torry I Co-Executive Produced Amazon’s hit series “Phat Tuesdays”. I also teamed with long-time friend and collaborator Big Boy, known as the voice of LA, to launch MooreBig Productions. MooreBig has a slate of compelling docu-series content we will be rolling out in 2023.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In life, there will always be obstacles and challenges, no matter what your direction in life. In the end, it’s not the challenges that are the obstacles, it’s how you approach those challenges and that approach will be what sets you apart from everyone else.
When I was a kid, maybe 4 or 5, I was blindsided, by this kid twice my size, Pow! I ran through the doors of my house and my Mom’s was like why are you crying & what’s that knot on your head. I told her what happened, she didn’t say a word, grabbed my arm and we were out the door. We found the kid and she was like, if someone hits you, you have to hit back. Doesn’t matter if you get in one good hit or if he beats you down, but let him know you’re not going down without someone facing serious consequences. That was it. I carried that throughout my life. I didn’t use my fists though, I used my mind. Any challenges that came my way, we were about to square up. I’m an introvert by nature, but I became the guy that knows the guy. I was the fixer.
I was a natural-born storyteller. I just saw any story from every angle, which allowed me to relate to all types of people & personalities, no matter who & where they were from. One Challenge, that I worked on and was able to conquer early on in my career was collaboration. Collaboration is key and the real obstacle is finding folks with the same level of integrity, commitment, loyalty, faith and professionalism that you have. I’d suggest to any young filmmaker, whoever you are at your core, will follow you throughout your career, so make sure that core is solid. If that core is solid then your approach to any challenge will be consistent and with consistency comes success. Also, know who you’re dealing with. What’s their core and does it align with yours.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a creative, as an artist and documentarian, I’m fortunate to have enjoyed a long career in story-telling & film-making. As a Director, one of the best compliments someone can give is that they were so engrossed in my film, it felt like they were actually there. My aesthetic as a Film-maker is the unique way I see life through my lens. I meld myself, become a fixture in that world so that life happens naturally around me & completely forget I’m there, which allows me to capture the most compelling and captivating story. My art has allowed me to document and capture life and different cultures all around the world and back.
Recently, I’m most proud of the impact of Phat Tuesdays, an Amazon docu-series, that I Co-Executive Produced, which told the compelling story of how many of the top Black Comedians got their start in a time when Black Comedians weren’t given their time to shine on stage. Phat Tuesdays was a huge triumph for Guy Torry and my Production Company BME & featured everyone from Dave Chappelle, Tiffany Haddish, Regina King and Snoop Dogg to Jo Koy, Nick Cannon, Bob Saget and Chris Tucker. As well as, 60 other notable comedy greats. Another huge takeaway about what we do as filmmakers is perseverance is key & follow-through is everything. Phat Tuesdays didn’t happen overnight, it was years in the making. From studios to producers, we didn’t stop until we found the right fit and made it happen. No matter how many winding roads you encounter and there were many, nothing happens overnight and you have to keep that core we spoke of earlier and the fortitude to know when you believe in project, you keep pushing until all roads align. You have to be a finisher and not just finish but finish next level.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
If you want to be in the business of film-making you have to be a risk taker. With most everything in life, there’s a risk and with risks comes much sacrifice, sacrifice equals time, but how far would we get without both risk and sacrifice. During the pandemic when no one knew if the world would live to see another day and other Production companies were shutting down, putting things on hold and moving to work-from-home models, my long-time friend and collaborator the one and only Big Boy, known as the voice of LA, decided to take a huge risk, we teamed up to form MooreBig Productions, LLC. We also moved into a two-level, fully operational production studio, editing bay & production offices in Calabasas, CA. It was a big move and risk that has already started to pay off. We have created and are executive producing a slate of incredible content, that we will be rolling out in 2023. This was one risk definitely worth taking.
